The Duke Endowment
Charlotte, North Carolina
The new 42,000-square-foot headquarters for the Duke Endowment is significant in the Foundation’s history in that it provides identity within the Charlotte community and the greater Carolinas region. Drawing from Mr. Duke’s intent for water power of the Carolinas to continually provide for its people, a correlation is drawn between a dam and river, and the building and site. The more traditionally appointed building echoes the strength, structure and rigor of a dam, while allowing for water, light, views, and circulation to penetrate and weave through the building, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and out. The facility consists of a ground level conference center and two levels of office space. Planned for LEED® Silver certification, the building is purposefully sited to take advantage of daylighting conditions, provide a drop-off plaza to greet visitors, and protect open space for an elevated courtyard and public park.
