Gensler played an integral role in realizing this striking new home for one of the foremost collections of contemporary art. Because the design envisioned by design architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro included numerous complex solutions, Gensler’s role extended beyond the conventions of “executive architect” to help develop and realize the vision. The new building, dubbed “the veil and the vault,” conveys the essential concept of expansive, column-free interiors behind a porous, veil-like exoskeleton. Gensler’s expertise served all areas of the project, from the unique public spaces to archive and conservation rooms, photography cold storage and exhibit fabrication shops.
