MOMENT at San Pedro Square

San Jose, California

With a variety of restaurants and events, San Pedro Street is one of San Jose’s most popular and lively places. However, a large parking structure dominating one side of the street resulted in a lack of appeal and foot traffic. Receiving a grant from the Knight Foundation for the San Pedro Square project, the San Jose Downtown Association asked Gensler to activate the parking spaces adjacent to San Pedro Street with retail and outdoor gathering space. MOMENT at San Pedro Square repurposed the ground floor of an existing parking garage into four, 400-square-foot retail spaces for local entrepreneurs and five street parking spaces were replaced with a parklet. Gensler developed these solutions to foster a flow of engagement starting at the pedestrian experience.
