Chapter 510 – Swan’s Market

Chapter 510 is a made-in-Oakland youth writing, bookmaking, and publishing center that is inspired by 826 National, a nonprofit organization that helps students improve writing skills. After previously working with Gensler on the renovation of an underused library space-turned-writer’s workshop at Westlake Middle School, the client turned to Gensler again to design its new Writing Center located in downtown Oakland’s Swan’s Market.

This multi-functional space for students not only supports programming, retail operations, and operational needs, but also doubles as a community hub for the local neighborhood. The interior renovation of approximately 2,000 square feet of space allows Chapter 510 to expand its free writing and bookmaking workshops, youth open mic nights, and events.
