Biola University, Lim Center for Science, Technology & Health
La Mirada, California
This prominent new building on campus provides a state-of-the-art teaching and research space that brings together the university’s undergraduate science, engineering, mathematics, and health programs. The multifaceted facades and window apertures frame views to campus landmarks. A grand butcher block stair winds through all four floors, interconnecting disciplines via a variety of open collaboration spaces fostering student-faculty interaction. The design team developed a highly efficient plan that reduced systems costs and allowed for greater flexibility and future reconfiguration through modular lab spaces. The new facility contains 24 specialized laboratories including organic chemistry, human anatomy, microbiology, virology, botany, material science, circuits, optics, and a large nursing simulation suite. A greenhouse, observatory, and solar photovoltaic arrays are accessible on the rooftop.
